Here’s everything you need to know about Imposters mode in Fortnite.
Despite having been published two years previously, Indie social deduction game Among Us saw a sudden and dramatic explosion last summer when a bunch of popular content creators discovered it and began to play.
Though the hype has mostly died down by now, many viewers never really got to experience the thrill of the concept first-hand. Epic did something similar with the “Spy Within” LTM in December, but it never really took off… This time however, they’ve got it right!
While it may be a blatant rip off, Fortnite’s new “Imposters” game mode is exactly what you’d expect if a billion-dollar dev team had built Among Us. Here’s how to play:
Matchmaking
To search for a new match, choose “Imposters” from the Select Game Mode screen. You can join a public lobby, or set up a private one to play exclusively with friends.
The maximum number of people per match is ten: eight Agents and two Imposters (more on that later). No worries if you don’t have the full ten, you can start a private lobby with as little as four players.
Note: When queuing with four to seven total players, there will only be one Imposter.
Roles
Upon loading into a new match, you will be labelled as either an Agent or an Impostor.
As an Agent, it is your responsibility to complete assignments and be on the lookout for any suspicious behavior from your companions. The Agents team wins by finishing all their tasks or successfully voting out all Imposters.
For Imposters, the aim is to eliminate enough Agents to take control of The Bridge before they get all the assignments done. To make this a bit easier, there are a selection of tools available to sabotage the Agents’ efforts.
- Disable Assignments - Temporarily freeze progress on all Assignments, buying you precious time.
- Teleport Players - Relocate all Agents and Impostors to somewhere else on The Bridge, covering your tracks.
- Peely Party - For a short time, all Agents and Impostors look like Peely so you can blend in with the crowd!
Remember, eliminating Agents isn’t the only way to get them out of the action. Tell a convincing enough story and you may be able to trick your enemies into voting out one of their own team. You can even complete Assignments as an Imposter to gain trust, though be warned this will count towards the Agents’ completion goal.

Gameplay
Navigate around The Bridge using the mini-map in the bottom right corner of your screen. Your assignments will be listed in the bottom left and highlighted in yellow on the map to help you find them.
Click your interact bind to begin completing an assignment. You will then be prompted to perform a basic task, like type in a security code or press a certain sequence of buttons to calibrate chests.
Keep your eyes peeled when working through tasks. If you catch an Imposter in the act, or else witness some dubious antics, you will need to convey this to your fellow Agents. Pay attention to where you are on the map and who is around you.
When an Agent is eliminated they will turn into a hologram. They can still fly around and watch the game unfold, but are no longer able to complete assignments or participate in Discussions.
For Imposters, the HUD will be slightly different and you will have the option to deploy your sabotage tools after a brief cooldown period.
Communicating and Voting
So how do we suss out the bad eggs? The Discussion phase allows all living players to have their say; calling out potential Imposters, defending themselves, and eventually voting on who, if anyone, they think should be removed.
A Discussion can be initiated either by finding the fragment (body) of an eliminated Agent, or by interacting with the Discussion panel in The Bridge’s center room.
Public voice chat is disabled, so unless you are in a private match you will mainly be relying on the specially designed Quick Chat menu to communicate with other players. This can feel a bit confusing at first, but you will get the hang of it after a few games.
Once discussions have concluded, you can choose who you wish to vote out or decide to skip. A player will only be kicked out if they receive the majority of votes, and when they are removed their role will be revealed. If you’re an Imposter, bear in mind an illogical vote could raise suspicion.
If you’ve played or even watched Among Us before, this new game mode will be very easy to pick up. If not, don’t panic, it’s not as complicated as it sounds! Hop into Imposters now and give it a try... just remember that not even your closest allies can be trusted.
